Hemiplegia 101: Learning and Growing Together
Together occupational therapists and parents explored such topics of postural control, alignment, muscle length, anatomy, home strategies and current treatment approaches such as modified constraint induced movement therapy and bimanual training. The class offered practical learning labs with hands on demonstration, dialog to share experiences among parents, power point lectures, and handouts. Success stories, as well as feeling of frustration, were welcomed and shared in this open dialogue venue.
• Parents had the following to say in response to the class when asked, ”Do you think the information today will lead to changes in your daily routine?“:
- “Yes, better quality communication with our son’s therapists and better (and more frequent) work at home.”
- “Yes, more stretching and specific activities to help support his therapy at home.”
• In regards to the overall session parents shared:
- “This was very helpful. I really appreciate the activity suggestions and opportunity to ask questions/discuss among ourselves.
- “Awesome session, awesome dialogue.”
Pathways is exploring the option of hosting a hemiplegia parent group on a regular basis. Please contact Marcy Pollard at mpollard@pathways.org or (847)510–5651 if you are interested in joining the discussion.

The TAP-it has arrived!
Through the generous donation of one of our families we have received the TAP-it www.teachsmart.org. The TAP-it (Touch Accessible Platform Interactive Technology) is the first ADA compliant interactive learning station built upon Smart Board technology. Use of this device will enable children of varying abilities access to computers through touch. TAP-it is unique in that it can be positioned in a variety of heights and angles for the individual. We are excited to have this new dynamic therapeutic tool at our Center.
iPads Have Arrived at Pathways Center
Thanks to a grant from the Helen Brach Foundation, therapists will be able to use 3 new iPads and many new toys to motivate children as they work on their therapy goals.
