How can I encourage sensory development?

Sensory Basic

You can encourage sensory development in infants by exposing them to new sights, sounds, textures, and tastes, and doing activities that help with balance, body awareness, and the internal sense. Here are examples of sensory activities that engage each of Baby’s senses:

  • Sight: Play with mirrors and toys with lots of colors

  • Hearing: Talk and sing to Baby

  • Smell: Let Baby smell the foods you cook

  • Taste: When Baby has started solids, have them try variety of fruits and veggies

  • Touch: Give Baby toys with different textures

  • Vestibular: Rock and swing Baby gently

  • Proprioception: Massage Baby with a wet washcloth during bath time

  • Interoception: Follow a routine , which helps Baby recognize their body’s cues for hunger, sleep, etc.
