Make a Snow Globe, Make a Memory, The Perfect Winter Project to Promote Fine Motor Skills

DIY Crafts for kids are a great activity to help your little one show off their creativity and help develop their senses. Snow globes are great winter decorations and bonus: they’re fun to create! Making them even helps kids with their executive function skills, including reading and following directions, planning and organizing an activity, and using working memory. Have your child read and follow these directions. You only need a few materials and a short amount of time to create a wintery snow globe!

What You’ll Need:

  • A glass jar with a lid
  • A few teaspoons of glitter
  • Water
  • Glycerin (optional) to help the glitter float
  • Wintery plastic figurines (sleighs, snowmen, evergreen trees, etc)
  • Plastic snowflakes (optional)
  • glue or a hot glue gun
  • Paint (optional)

Remember to supervise children throughout the activity to avoid them choking on small plastic pieces, putting the glitter or glycerin in their mouth, or playing with the hot glue gun.

Directions for Making a Snow Globe:

  • If you want to customize your jar, paint the outside of the lid in the wintery color of your choice! You can also paint a design on the glass jar if you’d like.
  • Once you have your materials laid out, let your child pick which plastic figurine they’d like to use. Then, glue their chosen piece to the inside of the jar lid.
  • Fill the jar with water and glycerin.
  • Add the glitter.
  • Screw or glue the lid onto the jar. Gluing the jar shut will help prevent children from opening it in the future.
  • Once the glue is dried, turn the snow globe upside down to rest on its lid. Shake the snow globe and enjoy watching the glitter and snowflakes fall.

Making a snow globe can unleash a child’s creativity and also help develop their sensory integration and fine motor skills. Adding the materials into the jar one-by-one can also help a child practice following directions and help improve their fine motor skills! Once completed, snow globes are visually stimulating and watching the glitter move around in the globe may help them relax.

Try this fun DIY crafts for kids idea at home. Don’t forget: you can use this all year round! If the kiddos love making their own snow globes, you can use different figurines and paint colors to make one for every season!
