The smell of hot chocolate is in the air, lights decorate the yards, and streets and you’re bundled up to go outside. This can only mean one thing: the holiday season is here! To get in the spirit, we’ve got some fun winter crafts ideas to help your little one get involved in the festivities of the season.

Not only are these winter crafts a great way to make your child feel helpful in decorating the house, they’re also fun activities to do indoors now that it’s getting cold outside. If your child is old enough to be in school, winter break is around the corner. These activities are enjoyable and engaging for your kids to continue using important skills while they’re away from school. Rather than vegging out in front of the TV, iPad, etc., these winter crafts are a great way to entertain the kids, keeping them away from the TV and their boredom at bay.

Check out some of our favorite winter crafts:

DIY Holiday Ornaments

There are so many options when it comes to making ornaments for the tree or around the house.

  1. Head to a craft store to get some supplies, such as white foam balls, paint, and ribbon to make simple (and kid-proof) ornaments that won’t break when they’re inevitably dropped on the floor. Memento ornaments are wonderful crafts that you’ll keep for years.
  2. Take a small school picture and glue it to a circular piece of cardboard.
  3. Your child can glue green pom poms around the photo (with a few red interspersed) to create the perfect wreath ornament. They’ll be able to look back at their picture in years to come.

If you want super easy, you can always go with the classic candy cane decorations – all you need are pipe cleaners and beads. Have Popsicle sticks around the house? Glue them together to make snowflakes and Rudolph faces!

Paper Snowflakes

Speaking of snowflakes, we can all remember folding up pieces of paper and cutting out patterns to make paper snowflakes back in the day. This craft is always entertaining to kids because each snowflake is an opportunity to create a new design. It’s easy and you already have the materials. Now your child can transform their room into a winter wonderland!

DIY Gift Wrap

If your child loves to give you their latest drawing, this is the perfect winter craft. Grab a roll of butcher or kraft paper and let your kid go to town with the crayons. Nothing makes a present more special than a personal drawing to go along with it.

Cookie Decorating

Perhaps one of the most important parts of this season is all of the baked goodies! On a cold, blistery day you can spend the afternoon inside baking your favorite cookies and decorating them with your little one. Children love to help their parents in the kitchen. It’s also a great opportunity for you to give them easy and simple instructions to work on their executive function skills! After the cookies are made, grab some icing, sprinkles, candy buttons, and more to get your child’s creative juices flowing. For a simplified craft, you can always buy a Gingerbread House kit at the grocery store. Together you can build and decorate the house!

These fun crafts are sure you keep your child amused and bring the family together this season. Even if you’re not celebrating the holidays, crafts help with family togetherness all year long!
